In the lead-up to a ceasefire, back-channel negotiations, out of the public eye, are a mix of testing the waters, proposing, revising, abrupt changes, and compromising. The resulting ceasefire is rarely serene. Instead, its surface guidelines are marked by resentment, suspicion, and swelling animosity. Sadly, studies indicate that approximately 80% of ceasefire agreements fail to transition into a permanent resolution, and hostilities resume. But the final section of Ceasefire Triptych, focuses on the other 20%, offering a glimmer of hope. Ceasefire was commissioned and performed by the South Bend Symphony in 2021 as a standalone piece. Back-Channels and A Glimmer of Hope were commissioned by the South Loop Symphony Orchestra in 2026 to bookend Ceasefire. They premiered the full Ceasefire Tryiptych in 2026.
